PANOS Institute is an International non-governmental organisation (I.N.G.O.) which has the two-fold objectives of :

• strengthening the media in countries in the South and their capacity to produce, in relation with all the components of the civil society, pluralist information, which is the guarantee of a culture of peace and democracy

• supporting the production of information on priority issues, furthering the circulation of this information at a global level, arousing, stimulating and informing public debate in both the South and the North on topical themes.

The themes on which Panos gives a priority attention are among others pluralism of information, media role in the conflict prevention and management, relation between migration and development, AIDS, globalisation…

At the era of new technologies of information and communication, Panos wants to promote the central role that information and communication play in the development of societies in both the North and the South. Panos aims to reduce inequalities between "information rich" and "information poor".

PANOS Paris Institute is a non-profit organisation under a French statute of 1901. It develops, for 2001-2003, three main programmes :

• RISOM Africa - Rights and Institutional Strengthening Of the Media in Central AfricaA programme of support to pluralism of information. Covering nine Central African Countries, it aims globally to develop pluralism of media in Central Africa and at the same time to strengthen pluralistic information for democratisation, human rights in relation with the several actors of the society, private or public. It is initiated by local co-ordinators in relation with several partners and correspondents of the sub-region.

• MIPIAD - Migration, Pluri-cultural Integration and Development - A programme of production and dissemination of information - with the central objective to stimulate pluralistic debates on the relations between migration and development in both the host and home societies. This programme, developed initially in Europe in partnership with several network of immigrant and ethnic minority organisations of various areas, are going to be extended to North America since 2001.

• MPMedia for Peace An interregional programme to support the role that media play in prevention and management of conflicts. Panos Paris is responsible for implementing the programme actions in Central Africa in relation with its local partners and collaborators. It is also responsible for the interregional co-ordination of the programme, in relation with others implicated Panos: Panos London, Panos West Africa and Panos East Africa.
