From the origins to year 2000

In 1986, the British biologist and journalist Jon Tinker founded Panos with the aim of strenghening the capacities of journalists in both North and South to produce unbiased reporting on the key issues confronting the planet and to formulate critical analyses of the possible options to resolve them.
Panos Paris was one of the first three Panos Institutes to be created, alongside Panos London and Panos Washington.

In its first twelve years, the Institut Panos Paris mainly concentrated on supporting media pluralism in West Africa, culminating in the creation of an autonomous Panos West Africa in 2000.
The Institut Panos Paris has also worked to raise awareness and recognition of the role of immigrant communities from West Africa as development stakeholders in their own right, both in France and their countries of origin.

2000-2006 period

- Redeployment of programmes to support media pluralism as tools for peace and democracy, initially towards Central Africa (2001), then towards North Africa and the Middle East (from 2002 onwards).

- Reformulation of the main lines of work on migration in Europe; development of a specific approach to media produced by and for communities of migrant origin also called ethnic and diversity media.

Aims for 2007-2010

- Strengthening existing programmes, diversifying their partners and modes of intervention, extending their geographic coverage.

- Developing a thematic component on HIV/AIDS within existing programmes.

- Exploring opportunities to launch new partnerships in various geographic regions where the expertise of the Institut Panos Paris is called for.

In classical Greek, the word Panos refers to a beacon, lighting the way, just as shared information illuminates and renders things intelligible.
